This eye-catching dental floss brand from the disco era really stood out on store shelves.
HERE’S AN ODDITY from the days of beanbag chairs, bell bottoms and lava lamps: Sunny Smiles Dental Floss. It wasn’t necessarily better or worse than other 1970s brands, aside from its claim of being “super strong.” What caught my eye was its undeniably electric marketing, seemingly aimed at those with a bit more pep in their step and personal care routines to match. Two other things also distinguished this rare, unopened, mint-condition package: the $1.79 price tag, which was awfully expensive for floss in the 1970s, and the fact that it seemingly remained in production for several more decades. That’s right, when I googled it, I found a website for the original manufacturer still active. My emails and calls, sadly, went unanswered. Still, it’s nice to know this fun floss still had fans long after
other 1970s trends faded.
