DDS, The Ohio State University College of Dentistry
Why He Was Nominated:
Following dental school, Dr. Skale completed an AEGD residency at Bay Pines VA in Florida, where he provided free, comprehensive care to veterans. He began a focus on TMJ and sleep therapy and was recommended for Diplomate status by Drs. Allen Moses and Steven Olmos, two “founding fathers” of dental sleep medicine. He is a Diplomate with the American Board of Craniofacial Dental Sleep Medicine and a Fellow of the American Board of Craniofacial Pain.
Tool He Can’t Live Without:
“We do a lot of cosmetic restorative cases, so Ivoclar’s Optrasculpt Pad is a game changer. My team knows if we’re doing a direct composite case, this instrument is in my hand.”
Most Memorable Patient:
“ ‘Bam-Bam’ was a 4-year-old boy whose nickname was based on his behavior. I identified multiple risk factors for pediatric sleep-disordered breathing and referred him for a sleep study. His O2 nadir was below 80 percent, oxygen desaturation that will negatively affect the developing brain. ‘Bam-Bam’ ended up having an adenotonsillectomy and soon shed his sleep disorder and his nickname.”
