No dentist is an island, and in recent years acknowledgement of the importance of mentors at every stage in one’s professional and personal lives has skyrocketed. As such, for this fourteenth iteration of our annual 40 Under 40, we thought we’d inquire about the best advice our honorees have ever received—and given.
IT’S FITTING, we thought: All 80 doctors (40 generalists, 40 specialists) on the pages ahead are both young enough to willingly accept advice yet seasoned enough to be qualified to give it as well. The help we get from and give to others enriches us—and these top young practitioners from all across the country are making the most of their professional nous to continue driving dentistry forward. Congratulations to them all—and enjoy their stories.

I’d never seen a dentist that looked like me, and I knew dentistry would become my ‘ticket out of the hood.’ Today, I’m a mentor to many minority students

The Best Advice She’s Ever Given: “When it comes to how quickly you can do procedures, take it slow and focus on doing great care. Speed comes with time.”
Something People Don’t Know: “I enjoy driving on track in BMW driving events. It’s a hobby I do with my dad; I’ve been to four racetracks so far. At these events, we learn car control and high-performance driving and racing skills on challenging courses ranging from one to four miles in length.”

Their practice name tells the tale: Kindness is at the heart of everything they do and every patient they care for.

Dr. Oestervemb transitioned from a general dentist to a full-time implant specialist during that time, consistently transforming patients’ lives with complete smile makeovers.
Why They Became Dentists: DeWeerd: “I was very close to my grandmother, who was a nurse. I shadowed different health fields, but I loved how dentists work with their hands and are able to get to know patients over the years.” Oestervemb: “My dad was a dentist; his dad was a blacksmith who also pulled teeth.”
Most Memorable Patient: Oestervemb: “A 96-year-old who had not been able to wear dentures for more than 20 years. He kept thinking he was going to die soon, but at 96, he’d had enough. All he wanted to eat was pizza. The day we delivered his implant denture, I told him I would order him a pizza, but he said his daughter already had pizza waiting for him in the car.”

Why She Became a Dentist: “Growing up, many of the people who raised me had difficulty eating because they were missing teeth. They smiled without teeth or covered their mouth when they laughed. I became a dentist to help people eat better, smile more comfortably and be able to express their joy without feeling self-conscious.”
Most Memorable Patient: “My dear sweet little Leah. She has autism, and we always wear pigtail braids and sing Disney songs together.”

Why She Became a Dentist: “Around age 10, I was in an accident and experienced a lot of dental trauma; I didn’t have access to care or means to have treatment for over a year. Social interactions and self-confidence were the hardest factors for me, and afterward I always wanted to help others look and feel their best.”
First Job After Dental School: “I did a one-year AEGD residency with the Navy. After my residency, I was stationed on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CNV-69), an aircraft carrier. I was the lead dentist providing full general dentistry services in support of 7,500 sailors and airmen on board and within the entire carrier strike group.”
Inspiration: “My husband, Scott. He has been my biggest support throughout my career, from encouraging me while living on an aircraft carrier and being out to sea for two years.”

Region: Long Island, New York
Name of Practice: Grace Dental Smiles

He has placed thousands of implants and completed a demanding 60-hour IV sedation course. He has an adventurous nature: He’s a private pilot, accomplished scuba diver and travel enthusiast.
Why He Became a Dentist: “Dentistry is a mix of hand skills, creativity, critical thinking and art. I also have an entrepreneurial spirit and enjoy running a business aside from the clinical aspect.”

The Best Advice He Ever Got: “The Japanese concept of ikigai, or ‘reason for living.’ If you have a strong understanding of your purpose, it gives you direction and makes major decisions easy. We get caught up in day-to-day life. Don’t lose sight of your ikigai.”
The Best Advice He’s Ever Given: “A positive growth mindset is so powerful. You paint your world from your own perspective. See the positive in every situation, and never stop learning.”

Michael Kaufman
KAUFMANDENTALPGH.COM
Age: 33
City: Wexford, Pennsylvania
Name of Practice: Kaufman Dental
Education: DMD, University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine
Why He Was Nominated: Kaufman Dental is built on the foundation of patient education to drive treatment acceptance. Dr. Kaufman focuses on treatments in family and cosmetic dentistry, offering a range of procedures including restorative dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, full arch rehabilitation and implant placement and restoration. He has received regional publication awards as “Best Dentist North of Pittsburgh” and is an evaluator for the Dental Advisor series of publications, reviewing new and innovative products in restorative dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, composite resins and surgical/implant dentistry.
Why He Became a Dentist: “Being able to blend medicine and artistry was a major draw, setting dentistry apart from other health care fields. Dentistry also has far more opportunities to run and operate a small practice, and that freedom to set my own practice’s goals and priorities was always exciting.”
Exciting New Trend: “Digitally guided implant surgeries. I know these aren’t groundbreaking or ‘new,’ but the availability of the guides and being able to treatment-plan the surgery in advance makes implant placement smooth for the dentist and the patient.”
The Best Advice He Ever Got: “ ‘Don’t prioritize the money. Prioritize the patient.’ A lot of times dentists feel burdened with all the costs of what we do: the student loan debt, business debts, technology and equipment, materials, staffing. We have to be aware of these, but our top focus should always be on the patient in front of us. Taking the time and effort to do that will create success, even if it takes a little more investment.”
Moid Khan
@LUSHDENTALSTUDIO
Age: 31
City: Sacramento, California
Name of Practice: Lush Dental Studio
Education: DDS, University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry
Why He Was Nominated: Recognizing that his aspirations in dentistry extended beyond being an associate, Dr. Khan invested more than $60,000 in his first year out of dental school on continuing education courses: dental implants, orthodontics, business and leadership. He weathered the pandemic with aplomb; by late 2020, his practice had grown so substantially that he expanded from five rooms to seven, and in 2023, he took over the adjacent space, expanding from seven patient rooms to 12.
Exciting New Trend: “Digital dentistry. Procedures that previously took weeks can now be completed in an hour.”

Age: 35
City: Lilburn, Georgia
Name of Practice: Smile Pleasant Hill
Education: DMD, LECOM School of Dental Medicine
Why She Was Nominated: In 2018, just 29, Dr, Kinser was diagnosed with Stage III triple-negative breast cancer. “With no family history of breast cancer, this came as a complete shock,” she says. “After a year of chemotherapy and radiation, I was finally in remission. Unfortunately, the bliss of normalcy only lasted about 10 months. In January 2021, doctors determined I had treatment-induced acute myeloid leukemia. The treatments that had beaten breast cancer had led to cancer in my bone marrow. My only hope for survival was to undergo more chemotherapy and receive a stem cell transplant. Fortunately, through Be the Match, a 10/10 match was found! I am now five years in remission from breast cancer and three years in remission from AML. Many may say I am extremely unlucky, but I believe I am truly blessed.”

And a quotation from Brianna Wiest inspired me during my cancer battle: ‘You weren’t born to be comfortable. You were born to do hard things. You were born to tell a story that is only yours. You were born to show the rest of the world what is possible.’ ”

Most Memorable Patient: “One of my patients has many types of fruit trees on his property and would always bring in jams, jellies and other treats made from his harvest. After knowing him for a few years, he mentioned that it was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain his trees, so he started ‘adopting’ them out to friends and family. As a result, I am now the proud ‘owner’ of a thriving Asian pear tree in his yard, which I visit once or twice a year to prune and harvest.”

to the field. It helps read X-rays to identify pathology, but I’d love to see it predict growth and development.”
Most Memorable Patient: “Even though I’m a pediatric dentist, my most memorable experience was with an elderly patient. It took a long time for the anesthetic to work for him, so we planned that he would come an hour early to his appointment. An hour later, his tooth would be numb, and he’d feel comfortable for the procedure. From this I learned never to rush local anesthetic—give it time to ‘marinate.’ ”

Inspiration: “My parents. They escaped war and immigrated to the U.S. in the ’70s. Every hardship they had, which were many and unfathomable to most, they turned into success and raised four daughters, all of whom are doctors. They are the definition of the American Dream. Why He Became a Dentist: “My father is an oral surgeon, but he never encouraged me to become a dentist. I decided to take a different path and enrolled as a finance major in Binghamton University’s School of Management. I became fascinated with the stock market and thought I’d one day work on Wall Street. But as someone who always liked to have a backup plan, during my elective time, I took most of the premed science classes my first couple years. In the spring of 2006, I interviewed for a summer internship at a leading global investment management firm, and they gave us a tour of the trading floor. I remember this giant room with endless rows of desks and computers. Each of what seemed like hundreds of analysts were staring into their screens, oblivious to what was going on around them, except for one who was being berated by his superior. I thought back to the time I spent growing up in my dad’s office—he’d walk from room to room, happily talking with patients and their families all day. I got home from my interview and looked up when the next Kaplan DAT course was.”

But I loved their patient interactions and wanted to find a way to treat someone without being a physician. My dentist growing up was one of the sweetest people and opened my eyes to dentistry. In college,
I attended a mission trip and fell in love with pediatric dentistry.”
First Job After Dental School: “A group practice that saw Medicaid and was OON with most insurances. I learned a lot about what type

He revitalized it, spearheading a complete overhaul and equipping it with cutting-edge technology. He’s active in community events, providing support and donating equipment.
Why He Became a Dentist: “I never liked my smile, and I couldn’t get braces until later in high school. I vividly remember the day my braces were removed. Being an awkward, shy teenage boy, I still wasn’t comfortable looking in the mirror. It wasn’t until hours later that I caught my reflection in a car window. That was the first time in years I truly saw my smile, and it completely transformed how I viewed myself.”
Most Memorable Patient: “She came in with a significant open bite, maxillary cant and crowding. She didn’t say much and rarely smiled. We treated her with aligners. Her results were perfect. When shereturned a year later for a retainer check, I didn’t recognize her. She was smiling, outgoing and talkative—a completely different person.”
The Best Advice He’s Ever Given: “Work hard and run your own race. Have an abundance mindset and don’t use your energy worrying about competition. Use that energy to improve yourself.”
Something People Don’t Know: “I have moved 17 times in my life.”

CLASS OF 2023
Drs. Cyrus Aghdam
And Neelab Anwar
San Diego
It was only one year ago that this ortho power couple wowed our judges. Already, they tell us, the family at
Happier Smiles Orthodontics has grown. In addition to welcoming a new group of team members, the all-digital practice has fully integrated 3D printing into its operations, enhancing its offerings with clear aligners, 3D-printed expanders and custom braces. Unsurprisingly, both doctors lecture on clear aligners and help peers with difficult cases.
Dr. Sana Yusuf
Wesley Chapel, Florida
“We celebrated [our practice’s] two-year anniversary in March and my youngest turned 2 in April,” says one of the Class of 2023’s youngest members (center). So much for the terrible twos. Everything these days is decidedly un-terrible for the owner of Sana Dental Studio + Spa. Her practice has expanded, opening the med spa side and adding new tech like a hard- and soft-tissue laser. “I’ve had lots of docs reach out to me about how I brought the two different aspects of the office together,” Dr. Yusuf tells us, so she plans to create webinars on incorporating more aesthetic procedures in a primarily PPO practice. Also in the past year, “We did another mission trip with Angels for Humanity to Honduras. We saw 600 kids in two days!” Growing fast and giving back: That’s so 40 Under 40.
Dr. John Zalesky
Aurora, Colorado
The owner of Aurora Hills Dental has continued to make his mark in the dental community, joining the prestigious Catapult Education Speaker Bureau, where he contributes high-caliber educational content to dental professionals worldwide. He also recently finished his term as president of the Colorado Academy of General Dentistry, where he continues to serve as regional executive director and treasurer.
Dr. Andrea Tory
Canton, Michigan
The former commander and executive officer in the U.S. Army is marching ahead full steam at her practice, Parkside Endodontics. “I’m excited to announce that I expanded and added a wonderful associate doctor, Ethan Kolderman, DDS, MS, MPH. My business continues to grow and I couldn’t be more grateful and proud!” Dr. Tory,
we salute you.
Dr. Meyleen Izquierdo
Weston Park, Florida
“Since last year’s photo shoot, our family grew by one,” Dr. Izquierdo says. “We welcomed baby Ruby in July 2023 and hit our two-year anniversary of opening Pearly White Dental Spa.” In addition to introducing facial esthetics to the practice, she has also been busy with CE, jetting off as far afield as London. With her 40 Under 40 experience still fresh in her mind, Dr. Izquierdo says, “The photo shoot in New York was amazing, as well as meeting other dentists and sharing our practice stories.”
Dr. Sara Mahmood
Frisco, Texas
Busy, busy, busy. The founder of Brush365 dental is opening her fourth practice, set to debut in 2025. She has also accepted a role as VP of strategic partnership for the software company Kasper, and become a global clinical partner for aligner company SureSmile. At press time, she was set to speak on the main stage at Dentsply Sirona World 2024
in Las Vegas and scheduled for the inaugural DS World in São Paulo, Brazil. And, oh yeah, “I had my third baby—a girl!”

“A lot has happened since being part of 40 Under 40 in 2017,” says the owner of kVo Dental. She’s not kidding.
“After acquiring another dental practice in 2022, I merged it with my existing practice and dropped all insurance contracts.” She also became a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, Pierre Fauchard Academy and the International College of Dentists. On the home front, “I’m now mom to two wonderful children, 5-year-old Brayden and 3-year-old Cami.” Plus, after 12 years of running, she earned the coveted Six Star Medal for completing the World Marathon Majors: New York, Boston, London, Chicago, Berlin and the last one, Tokyo, earlier this year. n
