NEW JERSEY DENTIST
DR. MARIA SWEDBERG
AND HER HUSBAND, BRIAN, SHARE AN ABIDING PASSION FOR THE SLOPES.

THE COUPLE THAT skis together stays together? It certainly seems to have worked
for Dr. Maria Swedberg, founder and owner of Dentistry With a Woman’s Touch in Toms River, New Jersey, and her husband, Brian. The two have been schussing the slopes for decades, and to the extent it has bene ted their 31-year marriage, it’s also a boon for business: Brian is his wife’s o ce manager.

The pair have always been active; they met at a hang-gliding class in North Carolina near where the Wright Brothers made their first flight. But for Dr. Swedberg, 58, getting comfortable on skis took some doing. “I love the outdoors
but had never skied,” she says. “I lived in Florida and South America, so I never skied until I moved to Maryland my senior year in high school — and I basically crashed and burned.”

Enter, years later, her Minnesota-born husband. “I started when I was 5,” Brian says. “In Minnesota, you put two pieces of wood on your feet and go down straight.” (Brian’s passion for the sport has led him to high-level instruction; he coaches the Windham Mountain, New York, Free Ride Team, which competes in events through the United States of America Snowboard/Ski Association, a feeder program
for the X Games and Olympics.)

Dr. Swedberg has become quite the proficient talent in her own right, though she’s always in search of more — just like in her day
job. “You’re constantly improving,” she says.

“It’s just like dentistry: You take continuing-education classes not because you have to but because you want to. You want to be better.”
